Almost twenty-five years ago, the Association for Women in Mathematics established the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize, to be awarded to an undergraduate woman for excellence in mathematics. This year, Brown CS student Mattie Ji, a senior majoring in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science, was the prize's runner-up.
At the recent conference, work ("Low-Resource Languages Jailbreak GPT-4") from Brown CS PhD student Yong Zheng-Xin, postdoctoral researcher Cristina Menghini of Brown’s Data Science Institute, and Brown CS faculty member Stephen Bach was selected from 121 submissions to receive the workshop's Best Paper Award.
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP) is the organization’s flagship conference in computer systems and widely considered one of the world’s two top venues in systems research. Every year, their Student Research Competition allows undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their work to the community, and this year, Brown CS student Artem Agvanian and alum Hannah Gross (now a doctoral student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) won prizes for their work.
Every year at the Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence (EAAI), the Assocation for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) awards the AAAI/EAAI Outstanding Educator award, widely considered the highest honor in the field of AI education. This year's recipients were Brown CS faculty member Michael Littman and his longtime collaborator, Charles Isbell of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Last month, Brown CS alum John Stasko (now Regents Professor in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech) received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (IEEE VGTC).
R. Iris Bahar, Brown Professor Emerita of Engineering, Professor Emerita of Computer Science, and Adjunct Professor of Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2024 Undergraduate Teaching Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
For the second time since the honor’s inauguration last year, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)’s Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN) has presented its Distinguished Educator Award to recognize distinguished educational contributions to the Programming Languages community. The winners for 2023 are Brown CS faculty members Kathi Fisler and Shriram Krishnamurthi, who received the honor on June 19 at the 44th ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation (PLDI 2023).
The Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC), held since 1969, is widely considered the one of the two most important conferences in the field of theory of computing. This year, a 1991 paper by Brown CS faculty member Philip Klein and his doctoral advisees Ajit Agrawal (founder and current head of AKAconomics, a fintech company) and R. Ravi (now Andris A. Zoltners Professor of Business and Professor of Operations Research and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University) has received the conference’s 30-year Test of Time Award.
Juniors Lucas Brito, Jordan Feldman, Tyler Lane and William Lin were awarded the scholarships, which recognize excellence in mathematics, engineering and natural sciences.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association. Late last year, they elected Brown CS alum Atul Butte (now Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at University of California, San Francisco) to the rank of Fellow in the Section on Medical Sciences.
